We Fade to Grey
edited by Gary McMahon
250pp paperback £7.99
Launched at FantasyCon 2008 in September.
This is a major new anthology of five novelettes – seventy thousand chilling and atmospheric words, from five of the very best new writers of weird fiction in the UK today – Paul Finch, Stuart Young, Gary McMahon, Mark West and Simon Bestwick – with an introduction from Mark Morris.
Gary McMahon is the author of the critically-acclaimed novella Rough Cut, along with over seventy short stories, and will soon be published within the acclaimed horror anthologies Best New Horror (ed. Stephen Jones) and Year’s Best Horror and Fantasy(ed. Ellen Datlow).
Paul Finch is a past recipient of many awards, from the British Fantasy Society to the Horror Writers Association of America. He is primarily a screenwriter, with several episodes of “The Bill” to his credit, and is currently working on other film projects, including an adaptation of his critically-acclaimed novella Cape Wrath.
Stuart Young lives and works in Essex, caring for adults with learning and behavioural problems. He has previously won the British Fantasy Award for Best Novella (beating Joe Hill in the process). Though his short stories are well-known within the independent press, he was previously published in Future Cops (ed. Jakobowski and Christian, Robinson) and definitely a name to watch, along with Mark West and Simon Bestwick – both acclaimed for their short-fiction - who round off this anthology of superlative tales of the supernatural.
Stephen Gallagher writes that this is “as strong a collection of solid horror tales as I've read in a long time” whilst Nicholas Royle comments, “a maelstrom of evil curses, sickening violence, inevitable death, bereavement and the end of the world.” Mark Morris, in his introduction, remarks that this anthology is “a show of strength from the new generation.”
We Fade to Grey is aimed at those who love extremely well-written horror fiction that rely on atmosphere to produce the chills, not just blood and gore.
